Beginnings Early Learning Centre is a purpose-built care and education facility, catering for children 3mths-6 years. The centre is licensed for 38 children, with excellent teacher/children ratio’s. There is a separate Nursery room which caters to a maximum of 10 children under 2 years, in a calm and nurturing environment.
Located on beautiful Waiheke Island, the centre was established in 2005 and is privately owned by Andrew and Robyn Martin, who have 20 successful years experience in the Early Childhood Sector.
Here at Beginnings, we believe the journey of lifelong learning begins at home and feel privileged to be part of each child’s learning journey. We strive to embrace a Whanaungatanga approach within the centre by building reciprocal relationships through shared experiences with each child and their whānau while encouraging their sense of belonging within the Beginnings whānau.
We acknowledge and value that all children are unique individuals with their own experiences who develop within their own time. We strive to embrace a child led environment while encouraging positive social competencies and self-help skills. We believe that all children are capable and confident learners and value their independence, individual interests and personal strengths. We believe that children learn holistically through play in a loving, caring environment where they are encouraged to make their own choices. We feel each child should feel as equally valued and respected as their peers.
Where we value whānau as a child’s first teacher and ourselves as kaiako as their second teachers, we also acknowledge and support the environment as the third teacher. We believe children should have the opportunity to explore nature within the centre and in the local community. We strive to maintain an indoor/outdoor flow within the centre and expand on children’s natural curiosity within our Ki Waho programme.
At Beginnings we value the diverse multi-cultural whānau we have in the forms of our kaiako, tamariki, whanau and wider community. We are committed to supporting and upholding Te Tiriti o Waitangi through our inclusion and continual learning of Te Ao Māori. We strive to incorporate tikanga Māori, te reo Māori and te ao Māori within our centre environment while also supporting and acknowledging the multiple cultures of the tamariki who help make up our Beginnings Whānau.
Children are at the heart of everything we do, at Beginnings. Our aspiration for each child is, that they develop a positive attitude and disposition towards learning through play. The experienced and passionate teaching team, encourage each child to take responsibility for their own learning in an environment that supports children through meaningful experiences, positive social interactions and active exploration.
The teaching team at Beginnings are, well established and highly skilled qualified professionals, who are passionate about the care and education of children. Our specialist support staff have established experience in childcare.
Our Services are listed below
We are open for your convenience from 7.30am until 6:00pm, Monday to Friday. We are closed all statutory and public holidays. The centre is closed for two weeks over the Christmas break.
Our programme is guided by Te Whāriki, the New Zealand curriculum for early childhood education. Our children’s learning growth is celebrated through the holistic learning strands of Belonging, Well-being, Communication, Contribution and Exploration. Children’s strengths, interests and learning dispositions are celebrated within an environment that encourages the children to actively participate in their learning journey. We also offer a Ki Waho programme for an additional fee, where those attending explore different areas of the island and natural environment in a small group.
Food / Meal Times.
Our staff prepares morning tea and afternoon tea for the children, with an emphasis on seasonal fresh fruit and vegetables. For lunch our over two year old children bring lunchboxes from home and our infants and under two year olds enjoy mashed vegetables prepared on site by our staff. If your child requires specialist dietary requirements, please discuss your child’s needs with staff at enrolment or as they arise. We ask that parents please provide formula or breast milk for their infant child, otherwise the centre can provide standard milk for children who require it.
Routines / Rhythms.
If your child is still in nappies, please supply an adequate amount each day for their needs. We will sensitively support children and their whanau during the process of toilet training in a respectful and unhurried manner.
For children who still require a nap during the day, we will work with each child’s established routines to provide consistency and continuity. Your child is welcome to bring a comfort item from home to support the settling process and sleep routine.
At meal times we encourage the children to participate in Grace/Karakia. At Beginnings we celebrate Birthdays, Christmas and Easter. Please inform us if you don’t celebrate any of these, or if you celebrate any other religious/cultural traditions.
